A206 CAR NAME BOARDS
Variations:
- A206 Car Name Boards: Aston Martin, Bentley, B.R.M., Cooper, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lister-Jaguar, Lotus, Maserati, Mercedes, Porsche, Typhoon, Vanwall.
The boards were designed and templates produced before the B2 Hurricane Motorbike was released thereby dating them to no later than 1962 and explaining why there were no name boards of car models produced since 1962.
However, there are reports that other names such as Hurricane, Alfa Romeo and Ford have also been seen. These are either very rare or had been created by enthusiasts – more evidence is required. - The signs were produced in the Havant factory and also in the French factory at Calais. The fonts used for the car names are numerous. The French versions have one or two narrow fonts typical of the period. The other three or four fonts all originate from the Havant factory. There doesn’t seem to be any explanation other than the use of different printing machines and batches over a period of a few years.
- French bagged sets of names were retailed with three boards of the same car name whilst English bagged sets comprised six of the same car name.

- French banner has “DEPART” printed on one side and “ARIVEE” on the otherside.
- German Start/Finish sign has the word “ZEIL” printed on the ‘FINISH’ face of the banner. The correct spelling should be “ZIEL” and the word means “GOAL” or “TARGET” – in English, translating to “FINISH”.
The German word “ZEIL” is a 14th century word meaning a row or street of houses which could reflect row of cars on a grid, giving the manufacturer the benefit of the doubt, to explain the reason for the misinterpretation. - Variations in font placement, colour of base white plastic, and use of ‘SCALEXTRIC’ and ‘Chequered flag’ logos.Note 1: Spanish and Mexican banners were also produced locally.
Note 2: For use on multi-lane tracks, the use of string tied to the poles to suspend the banner across the circuit is required. - Green plastic bases can have a track clip on one end or, rarer, clips on both ends!
